This course offers a comprehensive, practice focused introduction to clinical supervision, guiding emerging supervisors through the foundations, processes, and relational dynamics that shape effective supervisory practice. Participants will learn to ground their supervision in clear theoretical models, establish strong structures and expectations, and apply ethical, developmental, and competency based approaches to assessment and feedback. The course emphasizes building culturally responsive supervisory relationships, navigating power and identity, and addressing conflict and rupture with confidence and care. Through reflective practice, consultation, and attention to wellness, participants develop the skills, self awareness, and professional resilience needed to grow into ethical, competent, and sustainable clinical supervisors.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Define the foundations of clinical supervision, including its purpose, context, major models, and modalities within the Canadian counselling landscape
- Establish a clear supervisory structure and shared expectations through supervisor identity development, role clarification, and effective contracting
- Apply ethical, developmental, and competency-based supervision practices using professional standards, appropriate interventions, and sound documentation and evaluation method
- Build and maintain a strong, culturally responsive supervisory relationship grounded in trust, safety, cultural humility, and awareness of power and identity
- Recognize and address relational challenges, conflict, and rupture using evidence‑based repair and conflict‑resolution strategies
- Engage in reflective, trauma‑informed, and anti‑oppressive supervisory practice by examining personal biases, parallel processes, and emotional responses
- Demonstrate professional accountability through ethical decision-making, consultation, mentorship, and supervision‑of‑supervision
- Develop as a resilient, reflective, and competent supervisor through self-assessment, wellness practices, and targeted professional development planning
- Evaluate and revise counselling or supervision business practices for ethical, evidence-informed, and culturally responsive integrity
More Information
This course is designed for experienced practitioners who are currently supervising.
Applicants must:
- Be a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) or a non-certified CCPA Professional Member holding a regulated professional title.
- Have a minimum of five (5) years of clinical practice experience.
- Be currently providing clinical supervision or have a confirmed opportunity to begin supervising during the course.
- Have access to one or more supervisees throughout the duration of the course to complete supervision-based learning activities and assignments.
- Hold professional liability insurance.
- Have no active ethical complaints or disciplinary matters under investigation with a regulatory body or professional association.

- Are actively providing clinical supervision or will be doing so during the course.
- Have access to supervisees throughout the duration of the course.
- Are able to complete supervision-based assignments, observation activities, and reflective learning exercises.
- Understand the distinctions between clinical supervision, consultation, mentoring, leadership, and teaching.
